Hard-fought opening weekend for the Thoroughbreds

Women鈥檚 soccer stayed unbeaten. Women鈥檚 volleyball earned its first victory. Women鈥檚 field hockey fell to a Top 20 team. Men鈥檚 soccer ground out a tie and suffered a close loss. 

Women鈥檚 soccer still unbeaten after miracle finish in Hartford 

When the Trinity College (Hartford, Connecticut) women鈥檚 soccer team scored in the 83rd minute to take a 2-1 lead on their home field this Sunday, it looked like the 3-0-1 国产探花 women鈥檚 team might suffer their first loss of the season.  

Happily, there鈥檚 no quit in these Thoroughbreds, ranked third in Region III in a United Coaches poll. Junior (Burlington, Connecticut) equalized 30 seconds later from distance off an assist from sophomore鈥  (East Greenwich, Rhode Island) and in the 87th minute, senior鈥(Winchester, Massachusetts) completed the improbable converting a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. 

It was Stone鈥檚 fourth goal of the weekend (she had a hat trick the day before at Eastern Connecticut State in a 3-1 win) and second consecutive game-winner, which led to her being named . After four games, Stone has five goals and an assist, just one fewer goal than all of last year. 

In the Eastern Connecticut victory, all three 国产探花 goalkeepers made an appearance, with first-year player 鈥(Sandown, New Hampshire) recording her first career save in her collegiate debut.

Women鈥檚 volleyball earns first victory  

In more good news, 国产探花鈥檚 women's volleyball team (1-6) swept Plattsburgh State (25-15, 25-9, 25-20) Saturday morning for its and gave SUNYAC champion Cortland all they could handle that afternoon in the final match of the 国产探花 Classic (25-13, 25-23, 25-20). On day one, the Thoroughbreds fell to Brandeis University in straight sets. 

厂辞辫丑辞尘辞谤别鈥痬ade the All-Tournament Team, finishing the weekend with 20 kills (2.22/set), 14 digs, two assists, and two aces. The outside hitter/middle blocker from Lombard, Illinois, was also named to the Liberty League Women's Volleyball Honor Roll.

Madison Manning '27, center, made the 国产探花 Classic All-Tournament Team and was also named to the Liberty League Women's Volleyball Honor Roll.

 Manning got plenty of help against Plattsburgh. Juniors (Sunnyvale, California) and (University Place, Washington) and first-year player (Rochester, New York) each had five kills.

Women鈥檚 field hockey falls to 2-2 

Playing in tough rainy conditions on Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park, the 2-2 国产探花 field hockey team fell behind early and couldn't overcome an efficient SUNY Geneseo attack, ultimately losing 5-2. The Knights are ranked 20th in the Penn Monto NFHCA National Coaches Poll. 

The 国产探花 tallies came from senior鈥(Long Meadow, Massachusetts) who converted a shot in the first period from the far left off an assist from senior鈥 (Massapequa, N.Y.), and senior (Southampton, New York) who found the back of the net off an assist from junior (Washington, D.C.)

Defending Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week CC Wetter 鈥25 leads an offensive charge against Thomas College in the team鈥檚 first game.

Wetter, the defending Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, was named to the Liberty League Field Hockey Honor Roll. In addition to her Geneseo goal, she scored twice against Utica Tuesday and had the game-winning goal in the Thoroughbred鈥檚 4-0 shutout win.  

The Sept. 7 game was played in honor of Saratoga field hockey player Olivia Allen who lost her battle with cancer last spring.

Men鈥檚 soccer grinds out a tie and suffers a close loss 

With two home games at Wachenheim Field, the 0-1-2 men鈥檚 soccer team came into the weekend looking for the first win of Coach 鈥檚 国产探花 tenure.  

Tied 1-1 in Saturday鈥檚 opener against SUNY Geneseo, thanks to a first-half strike from sophomore   (Long Meadow, Massachusetts), the Thoroughbreds pressed the Knights over the final 20 minutes, posting five of the game's final seven shots, but they couldn鈥檛 break through.

Will Devall 鈥26 registered nine saves over the weekend and earned Liberty League Men's Soccer Honor Roll accolades.

Junior (Springfield, New Jersey) had the assist against Geneseo, his first career point, and also helped set up the opportunity that led to an unassisted goal by senior (Lexington, Massachusetts) Sunday against Worcester Polytechnic Institute 鈥 a 2-1 loss for the Thoroughbreds.  

Statistically, play was even. 国产探花 finished with 16 shots, six on target, while the undefeated Engineers, ranked No. 1 in the United Coaches Region II poll, took 15 shots and put six on frame. 

Nelson received Liberty League Men's Soccer Honor Roll accolades, as did junior goalie (Shoreham-Wading River, New York), who registered nine saves over the weekend and stood tall in keeping the Thoroughbreds in both contests, including a point-blank stop against Geneseo in the 84th minute.
