Software Engineering Manager at Google Career Advisor google.com Class Year of Child: 2029 Occupation: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics BS in Computer Systems Engineering from Stanford
MS in Computer Science, with specialization in Human-Computer Interaction from Stanford
I've spent over 25 years in the software industry, mostly working for a variety of smaller startups. After a brief stint doing user interface design for a small startup in Austin, Texas, I switched back to software engineering at an early startup working on "internet-enabled TVs". and then moved on to another software engineering role at one of the first companies doing video players for websites (before YouTube). At that company, I first started managing other engineers. From there, I moved on to video advertising startup, where I spent over 5 years managing teams, eventually becoming the Senior Vice President of Engineering, DevOps, IT, and Product Management. After that company was successfully acquired, I spent a year as the SVP of Engineering, IT, and DevOps at a small startup in the healthcare space before leaving that company for Google.
At Google, I've been a manager of managers for almost 7 years, running teams of between 20 and 30 people, focused on products that serve billions of users and truly embody "planet scale" computing. I started out working on Google Search, with my team responsible for ensuring Google Search remained reliable and available for users around the world 99.999% of the time. A little over 4 years ago, I switched from that to Android, where I now manage a distributed team (Cambridge, NYC, Mountain View, and Shanghai, China) that focuses on ensuring that Android releases are high quality and reliable for users, applying the same core principles in a completely different space, where our software is used to safely deploy software to over 3 billion Android devices. Identity-based organization: I am one of the leads for the Google Gender Diverse Kids Caregivers group that focuses on helping parents and other caregivers support the Trans, Non-binary, and otherwise Gender-Diverse kids in their lives. I am also active in our Trans@ Google ERG and our local Cambridge chapters of the Black Googlers Network and Women@ Google groups. My pronouns are he/him.
